Week One in the Valley

The first week of the StepHarvest beta, from my side of the screen. Twelve updates, a full rethink of guilds and villager requests, our first festival, a lot of step-sync tinkering, and a stack of smaller fixes - all shaped by your reports.

One Week in the Valley

StepHarvest went live for Patrons on June 21, and as of today it's a week old. I wanted to look back at what that first week actually looked like from my side of the screen, because it was honestly a blur.

Twelve updates went out over the week, plus a steady run of smaller hotfixes in between. Most of them landed the moment you restarted the app, so I could react to reports almost as fast as they came in. That feedback loop with all of you shaped basically everything below.

Guilds got the biggest rethink

Guilds needed the most work this week. The tiers were resetting every week, which meant a guild could grind hard and then lose all its perks on reset day. That felt bad, so I moved everything to a rolling 7-day window, and perks now stick around as long as people keep walking. Alongside that:

  • Added playstyle tags (Casual, Balanced, Hardcore) so guilds can set expectations up front and avoid mismatches.
  • Put a preview of the next tier bonus on the guild home, so you can see what you're walking toward.
  • Opened up browsing, so you can look at other guilds and read their full descriptions even while you're in one.
  • Removed the 48-hour cooldowns. Getting kicked or switching guilds no longer traps you, though I kept a 24-hour lock on bounties after joining to keep guild-hopping in check.
  • Rebalanced the top step-pool tiers, which had turned out to be basically impossible.

Villager requests got a full pass

The old villager requests weren't great. The objectives could be a slog and the rewards didn't justify them, so I reworked the whole system:

  • You now pick one villager to help each day.
  • If you tap the wrong one, you can cancel and switch, no harm done.
  • Objectives are more realistic, with rewards that actually pay off.
  • A follow-up pass tuned down gem and foragable requests after a few of you flagged them as too heavy.

The Egg Hunt, our first festival

The Egg Hunt was the first festival with a real playerbase, and I was nervous going in. I did not expect you to clear all three community goals within a few hours. That was genuinely impressive, and it left me wondering whether to add a fourth tier (still thinking about it). Over the weekend I:

  • Cleaned up the festival UI.
  • Added bulk buying and a community tab.
  • Made the goals keep counting past completion.
  • Squashed launch bugs as they appeared, including a nasty black-screen crash after repeated runs.

Step syncing, my recurring nemesis

If there was one thing I kept coming back to all week, it was step syncing. Android Health Connect in particular liked to undercount on certain setups, and I chipped away at it across several updates. On top of the underlying fixes, I added:

  • Debugging info under Health Connect.
  • A shortcut straight to Health Connect settings.
  • Troubleshooting links in Settings for anyone still stuck.

One quirk worth knowing: when I correct an overcount, your counter might pause for a bit before it starts moving again. That's expected.

Tuning the economy

A lot of the week was small balance work based on what you were all reporting:

  • Bumped up a batch of crops that weren't worth planting (garlic, wheat, turnip, lettuce, parsnip, corn, tomato, sunflower, eggplant, red pepper).
  • Softened quick-sell decay so new players don't get punished for selling, and made sure crop quick-sell never drops below seed price.
  • Halved the gift cost from 200 steps to 100.
  • Trimmed watering costs.
  • Rebalanced pet expeditions so the rewards line up with the steps you put in.

A few more quality-of-life touches

A big theme was protecting you from accidents:

  • Confirmations before using consumables or gifting everyone.
  • A dedicated Use button during activities, instead of the whole card triggering an effect.
  • Quest-item warnings on the sell, craft, and gift screens.

And a mix of everything else:

  • Faster gifting and neighbor management.
  • Character editing added to profiles.
  • Clearer tool upgrade previews, so you can see what each level gives you.
  • A cleaned-up inventory and marketplace.
  • General performance gains, so foraging, mining, harvesting, and fishing all feel snappier.

Bug fixes

Plenty squashed along the way:

  • iOS startup and gameplay crashes.
  • The neighbors-list crash on open.
  • The invisible-character bug on the farm.
  • A long tail of little things you reported.

One week in

That's the week. StepHarvest turned one week old today, and building it out in the open with this community has been the best part of the whole project. Thank you for playing, for every report and idea, and for getting behind this from day one.

I'll be doing one of these every week, so I'll see you in the next one. On to week two.
